My Story

Hi, I'm Gaby. I'm the founder of Athletic Consult. I grew up in Ecuador, and had always dreamed of becoming a tennis pro. That dream inspired the steps I took that eventually led me to where I am today.

I always knew that getting to study in an American University was a big deal. Who doesn't? So, the first step I took was playing as much tennis as I could and practicing as much as I could. I would spend so much time at our local tennis club working to perfect my swing, footwork, and mental game. And that gave me great opportunity throughout Ecuador. I eventually made my way to becoming the number two playing in the country, which for me was a great achievement.

I had the chance to play tennis since I was 8 years old, and I was committed to being the best I could. My dream was to play professional Tennis. As I was getting into high school, and graduation was coming quickly, I decided to do my best to get a sport scholarship in the U.S. Then the work began. I searched and searched to make sure I had completed everything I needed to in order to be eligible and desirable to United States Universities. I had spoken some English, but it took a lot of work. So, trying to understand what I needed to do in order to be the best possible candidate was a little bit daunting.

After a lot of hard work and searching, I was fortunate to be asked to join the tennis team at Oklahoma Christian University. This was an amazing opportunity to be able to study in the United States and play my sport. It was great, and it was tough, but hard work brought success. In my freshman year, our women's team reached the NAIA National Championship! That was a big and exciting day. What an honor that was!

Now, I've had the opportunity to coach college tennis at UCO in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to coach at IMG Academy in Sarasota, Florida, and now I teach tennis to all kinds of clients at a country club in the United States. It's been such an experience being here, and finding success. But it's also been a long road. I would have welcomed a way to know every step of what I needed to do.

Some people I knew hired agencies to help them, and that's great, but for us it was expensive and we weren't sure it would work out. If I had a cheaper option, I might have done that. Once I realized that, I realized I might be able to do that for others so that they have another option where they know two simple things... WHAT TO DO and WHEN TO DO IT. And so, Athletic Consult came to be.

It's important to understand your real chances with your sport and skill level. There are more scholarships available in some sports over others. Even if you get a partial scholarship and then apply for financial aid, you can attend a United States University. Here are some important numbers to consider:

Now, if you're here and you don't see your sport, don't worry! You still have a shot at a scholarship and an education in the United States. We want to enable to you have your best chance to do that. If you don't receive a scholarship, that's ok too. The United States has lenders that can give student loans. Some options are here at eduPass.

If you decide to do a student loan to cover the additional cost of your education, please be aware of the terms of the loan that you agree to with the financial institution. The most important part to consider is the percentage rate of the loan. Make sure it's something that you can pay after you finish school.

Choosing the right major is very important as well. It's important to choose a major that will allow you to have a career that will allow you to pay your student loan off over time, and that will allow you to make enough money with the value you add to the work force in order to live the way that you want to.

Our timeline gives you time to complete each step as well as submit any documents to the schools you are interested in. Knowing how much time to give yourself is just another way that you give yourself the best possible chance to succeed in finding an athletic scholarship in the United States.
